Located in southern Algeria’s Sahara Desert, Tassili n’Ajjer and Tadrart are two of the region’s most breathtaking destinations, renowned for their unique landscapes, striking rock formations, and ancient rock art.
Tassili n’Ajjer, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lies in the southeastern part of Algeria, near the borders of Libya and Niger. This vast plateau is a treasure trove of prehistoric rock art, offering invaluable insights into the early civilizations of the Sahara. The intricate engravings and paintings here depict wildlife, human figures, and scenes that date back over 10,000 years, making it a must-see for history enthusiasts and travelers.
Tadrart, named after the Tuareg word for “mountains,” is another gem in Algeria’s desert landscape. Known for its Martian-like terrain, Tadrart is home to towering rock formations that resemble castles and cathedrals. The region is also famous for its vividly colorful sand dunes, which showcase an array of seven distinct colors, creating a surreal and unforgettable desert adventure.
Both Tassili n’Ajjer and Tadrart are top destinations for travelers eager to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Sahara Desert. Visitors can also discover the serene gueltas—shimmering desert pools that support life in this harsh environment, providing an oasis for both wildlife and adventurers alike.
Algeria is accessible via both direct and connecting flights from numerous locations worldwide. Depending on your starting point and final destination, there are several ways to reach this North African gem.
For travelers heading to Djanet, direct charter flights are occasionally available from France. These flights are scheduled based on demand and typically announced about a month before the start of the tourist season, which runs from October to February. To stay informed and purchase tickets, check Point Afrique’s online booking system, and compare prices from various airlines to find the best deal.
If you’re not traveling directly to Djanet, we recommend flying to Algiers first. Algiers International Airport is a major hub with connecting flights to numerous destinations. After arriving in Algiers, travelers can explore the city briefly before catching an evening flight to their chosen destination. This option often offers better flexibility and can be more cost-effective compared to direct flights, which are less frequent and may be more expensive.
If you’re traveling through Algiers, we recommend booking a connecting flight with Air Algérie, the national airline.
For those arriving in Algeria with personal transport (such as a car), there are ferry options to consider.
For detailed information on ferry routes, schedules, and prices, visit platforms like Direct Ferries or AFerry.
